I am at the scene of an accident - what do I do?

What to do if you have an accident
In many circumstances you will not be able to prevent an accident, especially if the accident is not your fault. If you are involved in an accident, there are several steps you need to undertake.
Am I insured to drive someone else's car?
Many motor insurance providers will allow their comprehensive policy holders to drive any other vehicle, as long as it is already insured by another driver. This means that you can drive your friend's car BUT it is likely that you will only be insured to third party level.
2. Make a sketch of the scene of the accident, where the two cars began before the accident, where they met and the final post accident positions both of the vehicles. You must also make a note of the road name and the address of any property that was damaged during the accident.

3. Do not admit responsibility at the scene of the accident or sign any statement to this effect. It is possible that this may cause offence to the other party involved, but stick to your guns. Your best response is to state under the conditions of your insurance, you are prohibited from admitting liability without your insurers written agreement.

4. If the damage is cause to another vehicle, property, animals or humans, to comply with the law you must stop and give your name, address, and registration particulars of the vehicle (along with owner's name and address, if different).

5. If anyone other than yourself is injured you must be able to show your Insurance Certificate to the police or to any other person, if you are asked. If you cannot do this at this time of the accident, report to the police as soon as possible and, in any case, within 24 hours. Note always ask for an incident number, your insurer will want it for the claims form.
