Claims for Eye Injuries

The eyes are very sensitive and injuries can range from minor problems which cause temporary discomfort to really serious eye injuries which cause permanent blindness. Because of their extreme sensitivity, if you injure an eye always seek expert medical attention and ideally, check in at your local hospital's Accident and Emergency Department.

Types of Eye Injury

Injuries range from impact injuries, to cuts, grazes, ingress by a foreign body, burns, and reactions to chemical splashes.

Small objects travelling at a high speed are the most likely to cause serious eye injuries as the person cannot see them in time to take avoiding action. For example glass shattered in a car accident or a stone thrown up at high speed by a lawnmower.

Symptoms

The symptoms of an eye injury will depend on exactly what type of injury has been caused but here are some of the more common ones symptoms:

Foreign bodies : If something has become lodged in your eye, it can cause a number of symptoms, including light sensitivity and tears, blurred vision and pain. You may also be able to feel as if a grain of sand is lodged in your eye. However, if an object has penetrated deeper into the structure of the eye, you may not have any symptoms.

Scratches : If you have a scratch on your cornea (that's outer surface of the eye), the symptoms may be similar to having a foreign body in your eye. It usually feels as if something is stuck in your eye and may be accompanied by the production of tears, increased sensitivity to light and pain.

Bleeding : If you have noticed a red blotch on the eye, it may seem worrying but it is usually due to a burst blood vessel. These red blotches can spread across almost the entire white of the eye and be very disturbing. However, they are rarely painful and should heal slowly over a week or so without any further problems. Sometimes such bleeding can be caused by a knock or high blood pressure, but more often than not, experts simply cannot identify the reason.

Orbital floor fractures : Orbital floor fractures may result when a blunt object strikes the eye. The globe usually does not rupture and the resultant force is transmitted throughout the eye's orbit causing a fracture of the orbital floor behind the eye. Signs and symptoms can be quite varied, ranging from double vision, swelling, bruising and pain particularly when moving the eyes.

Chemically induced injuries : The symptoms will very much depend upon which chemical has come in contact with your eye but it will often turn red and the eyelids could become swollen. You are also very likely to feel pain or a burning sensation.

Iritis : This is an inflammation of the iris and it occurs following a blow to the eye. Symptoms can include an aching sensation, decreased vision, light sensitivity and the constant production of tear. The condition usually requires medical treatment.

Light induced eye injuries : if the eye has been injured by ultraviolet light or lasers, the symptoms could include a feeling that something is in the eye, light sensitivity, redness and pain. In sever laser damage immediate blindness can result.

Preventing Eye Injuries

Most eye injuries occur in the workplace. That's why there are strict Health and Safety Regulations surrounding eye safety and eye protection. The basic precaution is to wear protective goggles in any work situations which could endanger employees' eyes.

If you work in a working environment which could lead to eye injuries, your employer should always provide training and equipment that will protect your eyes. Therefore, if you have suffered an eye injury at work because you were not trained or inadequately protected, you could be eligible to claim compensation.
