Claims for MRSA and other Hospital Infections

You may be shocked to learn that the Public Health Laboratory Service have estimated that one in ten people get an infection during a stay in a UK hospital. whilst they and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine have assessed the social and economic burden of Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs).

Their research in association with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine shows that on average a patient with a HAI :-

  • Spends 2.5 times longer in hospital than if they had not contracted an infection.
  • Can often require further treatment for their infection after they have left hospital.
  • Suffers additional illness and distress which is shared by their family and those who have to care for them once they have left hospital.

The most common HAIs are infections at the site of surgical wounds and urinary tract infections. Sometimes patients are unlucky enough to suffer multiple infections.

Claims for MRSA and other Hospital Infections continued

One of the most severe infections is a bloodstream infection caused by a bacterium called Staphylococcus aureus. This typically enters its victims through surgical wounds and intravenous line sites and is very easily transmitted from person to person. Strains of this bacteria that are resistant to the commonly-used antibiotic methicilin and other related antibiotics of the penicillin class, are called methicilin-resistant S. aureus, MRSA for short.

Symptoms of MRSA

Once the bacteria has entered the bloodstream it can cause serious infections in almost any part of the body. Internal infections can include septicaemia and septic shock, infection of the heart lining, lung infection (pneumonia), scalded skin syndrome, bone marrow infection, inflammation of the tissues surrounding the brain and spinal cord (meningitis), internal abscesses anywhere in the body, severe joint problems and occasionally toxic shock syndrome.

Around 1,000 people die every year from infections caused by MRSA.

Treatment of MRSA

Whilst MRSA does not respond to the penicillin class of antibiotics it can be treated with certain other medicines such as vancomycin or linezolid given as an injection or intravenously. However, while some suffers progress and make a full recovery, others are left with permanent medical disabilities. Therefore. It will come as no surprise to learn that cases of MRSA lead to a personal injury claim for compensation.
