Claims for Burns and Scalds

You may find some statistics regarding burns surprising. Around 112,000 people visit Accident and Emergency Departments every year with a burn and 8,000 are admitted to specialised Burns Units. But that is simply the tip of the iceberg. A further 240,000 visit their Doctor with burn and scold related injuries. Almost 50% of all burn and scald injuries happen to under 5 year olds, and 50% of these happen in kitchens.

So have you suffered a burn or scald due to someone else's fault? Did it cause pain and distress? Has it caused scarring or even worse? Did it cause you to take time off work or even lose your job? If any of these apply, then you may be eligible to make a claim for compensation. Complete the online enquiry form and a Claims Adviser will phone you from Claims Justice. You can then chat through your experience and decide whether to go ahead with your claim. Remember, Claims Justice has a No Win No Fee policy and you're guaranteed to receive 100% of any compensation that's awarded.

About Burns and Scalds

Unfortunately burning and scalding injuries are relatively common. Whether you are at home, in the office, or at work in a factory or construction site, you are constantly surrounded by hot objects. The dangers vary from a hot kettle to super heated steam, from vats of acid to molten steel and all need be treated with great care as even a simple error can cause serious injury.

Although most injuries are minor and can be treated with basic first aid, more serious injuries need urgent and professional medical attention. And in some cases the victim may need specialised care at a dedicated Hospital Burns Unit.

Claims for Burns and Scalds Continued

The injuries are undoubtedly painful and sometimes fatal. Even a small burn or scald can remain painful for a long time. Serious burns and scalds can cause damage to muscles, tendons, ligaments, even the nerves, and permanent scarring can follow. The scars can also cause psychological distress and they can sometimes contract reducing the body's flexibility and mobility. And corrective plastic or cosmetic surgery may be required.

Obviously anyone can be burned or scalded but young children and older people often suffer worse injuries because they tend to have more delicate skin.

So if you have been the victim of a burn or scald injury due to someone else's negligence, you may be entitled to make a claim for compensation.

The classification of Burns and Scolds

Most people think of burns being classified in one of three categories, first, second and third degree burns. But there are also fourth, fifth even sixth degree burns - but these levels of severity normally lead to death. As such we shall concentrate on the most common first three categories!

First Degree Burns

First Degree burns are the most minor injuries. Only the very top layer of skin is damaged (the epidermis) and therefore, blistering should not occur. First Degree burns will make the skin appear red and although there will be some pain, it shouldn't last too long - but that largely depends on the size and location of the area affected.

Second Degree Burns

Second degree burns are more serious than first degree burns. As such, unless the nerves have been destroyed, they will be more painful.  The burns affect the deeper layers of the skin so the skin will look bright red and blistering is likely to occur. As body fluids will be lost through the burn, the skin may look wet and if the injury extends to more than 10% of the body, the victim may go into shock due to the loss of fluids. And if the blisters burst they are liable to get infected.

Third Degree Burns

Third degree burns are also called "full thickness burns" are the most serious of the first three categories of burn. The skin in the area affected will be completely burned off and damage can extend to the muscles, tendons and ligaments. As the nerves will have been damaged the victim may feel no pain but nevertheless the injury is very serious and death can result if a large area is affected.

Third degree burns take a long time to heal and will invariably leave permanent scarring. Consequently, skin grafts and plastic surgery may be required.

Claiming compensation for Burns and Scolds

If you have suffered a burn or a scald due to someone else's negligence you may be able to make a claim for compensation. Remember, if you aren't given the correct training and protection at work and as a result you are burnt or scalded, then your employer is negligent and you have good case for claiming compensation against them.

To find out if Claims Justice can help with your claim on a No Win No Fee basis, complete the online enquiry forms right now.
