You've had a Car Accident so what should you do?

Immediately after a can accident, the odds are that you will be in shock. And if you're unlucky, you or someone else that's involved, may be injured.

If it's a serious accident and if someone needs medical attention, the first thing is to summon emergency help. That may not always be easy depending on the location of the accident and whether you are injured. But we live in the age of the mobile phone and the odds are that someone at the scene can dial 999.

If the police and ambulance service do attend, they will collect much of the information that you will need when you later decide whether to make a car accident compensation claim.

But let us assume that your injuries are not serious and you can at least take notes etc at the scene of the accident.

You've had a Car Accident so what should you do?

We always advise motorists to be prepared in case they are involved in an accident. It's best to be prepared for the unexpected. So take a tip, if you don't carry a mobile phone with a camera, have a camera in the car for recording the scene of the accident scene from many different angles. Pictures are better than a thousand words and will be a great help to your injury solicitor.

You'll also need a pen and notepad handy. Here are the things you should take notes of:

•  The names of the other people involved in the accident

•  The names and addresses of any witnesses

•  The registrations of the vehicles involved

•  If possible, the name of the insurance companies for the other vehicles

•  The details of the accident. Remember to record the positions of the vehicles immediately before and after the impact and the directions they were coming from

•  The width of the road

•  The relative positions of traffic lights, roundabouts and any other traffic flow controlling features (e.g. bollards)

•  Did any of the vehicles involved use their traffic indicators or lights?

•  The light and weather conditions at the time of the accident

•  Take notes about your observations regarding anyone who is injured

•  Did any of the other drivers appear to be intoxicated? If so, how did you come to that conclusion?

•  Did anyone involved make any comments to you concerning the accident? If so, what did they say?

•  Descriptions of the damage to the vehicles involved and any private property that has been damaged

•  The service numbers of any emergency servicemen who attended the scene and the address of the stations at which they are based.

All this information will be useful when you complete your accident claim form for your car insurer. And remember, if the police did not attend and someone was injured, you must still contact them and inform them about the accident.

If you were hurt in the accident, then as soon as you've got some time to yourself, and whether you think the accident was definitely someone else's fault or not, it's sensible to get some prompt independent advice about making a car accident compensation claim.
