Are there different levels of cover for pet insurance?
Levels of cover for pet insurance are usually put into three sections:
What is a select breed dog?
There are a number of ‘select breeds' which are identified by pet insurance companies as breeds which incite higher veterinary costs than other breeds, in the same way that some dogs cost more to feed. Therefore if you have what is considered to be a select breed dog, your insurance will incur a supplementary insurance premium.
Can I have more than one pet on one policy?
You can have more than one pet on your pet insurance policy – but normally the restriction is that the pets must be of the same type. This means that you cannot have a mixture of cats and dogs on the same policy although you can have any number of cats or any number of dogs on the same policy.
How do I make a claim with pet travel insurance?
You will need to send a claim form completed by you and your vet together with the invoice for your travel booking, as issued by the travel agent, tour operator or other holiday sales organisation. You will also need to attach any receipts or documents that are relevant to your claim type, in support of your claim application.
What can I do if I'm not happy with my pet insurance policy?
It is always best to make sure that you are happy with the cover offered by your pet insurance company before taking the policy out. Once you have taken out cover you have 14 days to decide whether the policy meets your requirements – and you should read your policy details quickly when you first receive them to make sure the policy is right for you.

Am I covered for a holiday cancellation?

Holiday cancellation cover is provided within most standard pet insurance policies.

This means that if you have to cancel or cut short a holiday because your pet has gone missing or becomes critically ill, you will receive a refund for the travel and accommodation expenses you cannot recover. The illness or injury stipulation is that your pet has been injured or is showing the first clinical signs or an illness either while you are away or up to 7 days before you leave - requiring immediate life-saving surgery. On average you can receive up to £1,000 during the policy year towards holiday cancellation.

When making a claim, you will need to send your insurance company a claim form which you and your vet have completed. You will also need to include the booking invoice and cancellation invoice from the travel agent, tour operator or other holiday sales organisation.

The invoices must clearly show the following: the date of the booking, the dates of the holiday, the total cost of the holiday, the date on which you made the decision to cancel or return home, and any expenses you have not been able to recover.
