Are there different levels of cover for pet insurance?
Levels of cover for pet insurance are usually put into three sections:
What is the maximum payout per year?
Every insurance company varies and you will need to refer to one particular insurer to find out their policy on this matter.
What is a select breed dog?
There are a number of ‘select breeds' which are identified by pet insurance companies as breeds which incite higher veterinary costs than other breeds, in the same way that some dogs cost more to feed. Therefore if you have what is considered to be a select breed dog, your insurance will incur a supplementary insurance premium.
Are alternative medicines covered?
If an alternative remedy is a viable option then you will be covered – although some insurers will only accept token amounts. Alternative medicines are more widely used in equine veterinary practices, in order to support physiotherapy and other long-term treatments.
What do I do when my pet dies?
You are covered if your pet dies from accident or illness – although you are not covered if your pet dies from old age.

What if I lose my pet by theft or straying?

If you lose your pet by theft or straying, you will need to complete a claim form and send it to your insurance company along with the following original documents:

  • Purchase receipt
  • Pedigree certificate
  • Kennel Club / G.C.C.F. registration
  • Receipts to support advertising documents (if applicable)

If you have regained your pet, and paid a reward to someone to do so - then you can make a claim for a refund of the award. In this case you need to send a receipts, including the name, address and telephone number of the person you paid the reward to.

If you lose your pet by theft or straying while the pet is with you on holiday, you will need pet travel insurance to cover holiday extension costs to find your pet, and possible advertising and reward costs.
