The most common cause of delay is enquiries about your health.
Sometimes your insurance is completed without any correspondence other than your receipt of the policy documents.

Sometimes you will get just one of the following letters or, if you are unlucky, four or five!

After your Application has been received by the insurer there are a number of letters you might receive. The following three letter are those you are most likely to receive. THEY ALL REQUIRE A PROMPT REPLY FROM YOU:

If your Application was completed over the phone, you will receive a letter from the insurer enclosing details of the answers you provided and asking you to confirm that the details are correct. Please check the details carefully. This letter may also ask your approval for your Doctor to provide confidential information about your health to the insurance company. If you do not answer this letter your Application will be put on hold.

If your monthly premium is over £50 you will receive a letter asking you to provide proof of your identity (Insurers are required to do this by UK Law.) The letter will explain what papers we need to see - photocopies will be OK. If you do not answer this letter your Application will be put on hold.

Your insurer may also have to write to you asking you to sign and return your Direct Debit. Your insurance cannot start until you have replied to this letter.

The letters described above are the ones you are most likely to receive - but there are others:

An enquiry from the insurance company about aspects of your health, or type of occupation, or potentially dangerous hobbies or sports. If you do not answer this letter your Application will be put on hold.

A letter from the Insurance company asking for more information about an answer you provided on your Application or even a question that was missed! If you do not answer this letter your Application will be put on hold.

A letter asking you to contact a specific doctor in order to make an appointment for a medical. (This letter can come from either the insurance company or your broker - it depends upon which company your insurance is being placed) If you do not make these arrangements your Application will be put on hold.

A letter telling you that the insurance company will only offer you cover at a higher premium or with certain conditions attached. You may be requested to either confirm your acceptance by phone or sign a form confirming your acceptance. (This is called a Rated policy.) Again depending upon the insurer, this letter could come from either your insurer or your broker. If you do not respond to this letter you will not be insured.

A letter enclosing your insurance policy for you to keep safe. Depending upon which insurer you are with, this letter will come from either the insurance company or your broker. You do not need to confirm receipt of your policy.
