Do you need special travel insurance for ski-ing holidays?

At the very least you should top up standard travel insurance with ski cover - but you are probably better off buying a specialist ski or extreme sports travel policy which gives you more extensive cover.

From the insurers point of view the chances of you breaking a leg on a ski-ing trip in the Alps is much more likely than sunning yourself in St Tropez. Higher risks like this are why few if any standard travel policies cover winter sports holidays - all the more reason why you should get adequate insurance provision if you are going ski-ing.

One way of doing this is topping up a standard policy with ski-cover. However, this may only give you limited protection compared to specialist ski travel insurance. Sometimes Travel Insurance Companies combine ski-ing and extreme sports cover in one policy.

Either way, a specialist policy should include £1million cover for medical treatment (more for the USA), £1million for personal liability in case you injure someone else accidentally, air ambulance to the UK and theft of ski equipment.
