- What does the term excess waiver mean?
- When you get a quote for your travel insurance you may find that the policy is subject to an excess waiver. This means that you will be responsible for paying the first part of a claim.
In the first place, it’s absolutely essential to be honest about past or current medical conditions and other relevant details that may have a bearing on the validity of your cover.
Secondly, it’s important to check your policy documents thoroughly. If you are not sure about any aspect of your cover, ask your travel insurer before you go.
Even if you are covered, you must follow the safety precautions stipulated by your insurer. For instance, if you are irresponsible with your property and it is lost or stolen, then you will jeopardise your claim. Furthermore, most insurance companies will expect you to substantiate your claim with police reports, receipts and tickets etc.
The list below summarises some other reasons why you may not be able to claim:
• If you knew in advance that your trip might be terminated for any reason.
• If you stated that your insurance was for a personal trip when it was business trip.
• If you are claiming for an injury that was self-inflicted.
• If you are claiming for an illness that results from aids, alcohol or drug abuse.
