According to a recently published survey, households in Nottingham are mostly likely to be burgled while those in Guildford are the least likely to be burgled.

With burglary levels 63% above the national average the midlands town topped the table produced by Endsleigh Insurance. It was also named as the UKs crime capital two years ago by think-tank, Reform.

Excluding student policyholders, the insurer looked at claims made over the previous 4 years and from this worked out which towns and cities had seen the highest percentage.

For the third consecutive year Nottingham topped the table. London and Bristol replaced Leeds and Hull as the next riskiest places to live in relation to household theft.

With burglary rates at 82% below the UK average Guildford in Surrey is at the other end of the table.

Endsleigh policyholders in Bath, Swindon, Norwich and Dundee have also made very few claims.

Money related items are most often stolen in burglaries. In approximately a third of burglaries cash is stolen. Cash and credit cards are more favourable to burglars, as noncash items can be more easily detected if the offender is caught handling them.

Cash highly conforms to the model of crime target, CRAVED, (Concealable, Removable, Available, Valuable, Enjoyable and Disposable). Another highly featured item is jewellery, which again conforms to CRAVED.

The item that has shown the fastest increase in items reported stolen through household burglaries is mobile phones. That said the level has remained stable since 2003/04.

Due to the fact that all vehicles manufactured since October 1998 have electronic immobilisers on them, as a mandatory requirement, there has been a significant increase in the theft of car keys with a view to stealing a car. An examination of methods where keys have been obtained to steal a car showed 37 % of them were from burglary.

However, a spokeswoman for Endsleigh insurance, Rhiannon Harris, says there has been a decrease in household theft across the UK.

She also added: "The fact remains, however, that some towns and cities represent a greater risk than others and as our homes report shows, every householder in the country needs to be aware of the possibility of burglary.

"It's crucial that, as well as helping the success of neighbourhood safety schemes where they can, people across the country must remain vigilant when it comes to home security."

Also comparing the level of accidental damage claims on household insurance policies, the End sleigh survey revealed that householders in the town of Bournemouth were most likely to make a claim.

Households in the southern, seaside town were 55 % more accident prone than the UK average. This was followed by Milton Keynes and Newport where as Manchester had the least amount of accidental damage claims.
