What Information Will You Need to Provide

Home Insurance

For Home Insurance you’ll need to enter details about:

  • Whether the property is detached, semi, terraced etc
  • How it is constructed (e.g. brick with slate roof – the web site will provide preset options)
  • The year the property was built (approximately)
  • The number of bedrooms you have
  • Whether the area has any history of subsidence, land heave or flood
  • Whether the property is in a good state of repair
  • Whether you have ever made a claim against a Buildings policy and if so, how long ago
  • Your Post Code and the street number, or name, of your property
  • Your E Mail address
  • In whose name(s) the policy is to be held (if you have a joint mortgage you should hold the policy in the same names.

After you’ve provided this information the computers will work out what rebuilding value they think you should insure your house for. The calculated value will appear with your quotation. If you disagree with the automated value, you can enter your own value (for example, if you have an up to date rebuilding value from a surveyor you should use that). When you have entered any revisions you simply click for a re-quote which will arrive on screen in seconds.

Contents Insurance

If you’re buying Contents Insurance then in addition to some of the questions above, the insurers will typically want to know:

  • Whether the property is secure – they’ll ask about the types of locks on your doors and windows, whether you have a burglar alarm and smoke alarms, whether you’re a member of a Neighbourhood Watch scheme etc
  • Whether the property is left unoccupied for long periods (typically 30 days or more)
  • Whether the property used for any business use (that’s apart from taking some business work home with you)
  • Whether you want to insure your possessions when you take them away from home (i.e. All Risks) and the value you want to insure for]
  • Whether you want to include any specified valuable items and their details and values
  • Whether you want to include Bicycles, frozen food in the freezer etc
  • What general contents value you want to insure for (sometimes the web site will suggest the value you need – it will base its suggestion on the size, type and location of your home. You will be able to change any automated value.)

Again, when you get the initial quotation you will then be offered the opportunity to change some of the cover offered and perhaps add various optional extras.
