What could Critical Illness cover be used for?
Anything you want. Medical expenses, repaying the mortgage, making your home easier to live in, school fees, general living expenses, but to name a few.
The following might help you decide how much cover you need.
How much would you need to repay your mortgage, overdraft, loans or any credit card balances? The freedom that comes from being debt free does wonders for recovery
Will Critical Illness policies permit the use of alternative medicines?
After you have been diagnosed with a qualifying Critical Illness and the claim has been paid you can spend your money however you like. So if you want to spend some of your money on alternative medicines then that’s entirely your choice.
What happens if your condition improves after making a claim on your Critical Illness policy?
Once the insurance company has paid you the money is yours to spend how you like. The policy is terminated and your insurer has no interest on how you live your life or indeed whether your condition improves or is healed.
What if you develop another critical illness or have a reoccurrence of a Critical Illness ?
After a successful claim the insured sum will be paid to you and that ends the policy. There can be no further claims.
Generally Critical Illness policies will pay a cash sum if your child is diagnosed with one of the critical illnesses listed on the policy. To qualify a child has normally to be aged between 1 and 18 years (although some companies only consider children from aged 3).

A payment made under the children’s provisions does NOT end the policy. So if a claim is made for a child, the policy will still remain in force. Therefore, you will still be able to make a claim if you (or your spouse, if the policy is arranged as Jointly) have a claim.

When your children reach 18 then they are no longer insured under your policy. If they want Critical Illness cover they must take out their own policy. (We’re sure they won’t mind you paying the premiums!)
