Can you extend or increase your Critical Illness cover at a later date?

If you have a policy with a renewable option then yes, you can increase, or sometimes extend, your cover. If you do not have a renewable option then you cannot change your cover. These days only a few insurance companies offer policies with a renewable option.

Hot Topics

What could Critical Illness cover be used for?
Anything you want. Medical expenses, repaying the mortgage, making your home easier to live in, school fees, general living expenses, but to name a few.
How long should you insure for?
20 to 25 years is most common but it really depends on how much you can afford and your personal circumstances.
What is “Total and Permanent Disability”?
“Total and Permanent Disability” means that if you are diagnosed with any illness, or have an accident, that totally and permanently prevents you from working, you have a valid claim.
What level of critical illness cover could your children get?
Insurance companies normally impose a maximum limit on any claim under the policy’s provisions for children. Sometimes the limit will be lower of a percentage of your own sum assured (e.g. 25% or 50%) or a set amount (typically £15,000 or £20,000).
What if you develop another critical illness or have a reoccurrence of a Critical Illness ?
After a successful claim the insured sum will be paid to you and that ends the policy. There can be no further claims.
If your policy is renewable then this means that you can alter your policy's benefits but often only within specified limits. There may also be the ability to increase the sum insured or even add other types of insurance such as life cover. Sometimes these changes can be made without further medical reports.

If the policy is not renewable then you simply have to take out a replacement or additional policy. (If you apply for a replacement policy do not cancel your existing policy until you have received the "On Risk" Notice for your new policy. You never know there could be a hitch with your new policy and if you finish your existing policy you can't restart it).
