Like anything, a credit card can be stolen or used without your knowledge, so follow these simple rules to keep your credit card secure:
- Make sure that when your credit card arrives in the post, you sign your credit card immediately so that no one else can use it. Always keep documents that come with your card in a safe place.
- Protect your credit cards as if they were cash, because credit cards and their numbers can be stolen.
- Never keep your PIN (personal identification number) with your credit card. When you receive your pin number, memorise it and destroy the evidence.
- Keep your receipts and compare them to your monthly statements when they arrive. If you see any questionable charges or errors, or unauthorised purchases, report them immediately to your credit card issuer.
- In case you lose your credit card or it is stolen, keep a record of your credit card numbers, and the telephone number for each credit card company – then you can report the loss immediately.
- When you are going out or traveling, only carry the credit cards you need to use.
- Never leave your plastic cards unattended in a car, office or changing room where a thief could easily find them. Similarly, do not keep plastic cards on the top of a handbag or in a pocket where they can be stolen easily.
- Ensure that your card is returned when paying for goods or services.
